The silicone heater is commonly utilized in the manufacturing and curing processes of traditional bows. The maintaining of the temperature is done several different ways. The most common ways to maintain temperature are by a rheostat controller, and for the people who enjoy a more finite control of temperature there are digital readout temperature controllers available. Some prefer to wire in a dimmer switch found at your local hardware store.

The most common failures seen in bow press heaters are broken wires due to flexing, pinch points or modifications to the unit made by the bowyer. The most prevalent failure is where the heater is allowed to "hang" unabated outside the form. In this case the damage is primarily found near the lead exit. The pinch point happens where there are sharp edges at the end of the pressure strip, and the pressure utilized causes the element to sever internally. It is always advised to insulate any excess part of the heater outside the form with wood laminations prior to turning the heaters on. .A silicone heater cannot be cut as this renders the unit inoperable. For example a 72" heater cannot be cut down to accommodate a 32" form.

NOTE: These heaters are typically used in pairs, and placed above and below the laminations in the form, separated by a pressure strip.
